Sunday afternoon: Vigil planned at West Philadelphia murder scene

Neighbors, churches and community groups are planning to gather at a recent West Philadelphia murder scene this afternoon for a “public witness” to oppose gun violence, end the movement of weapons from gun shops to the criminal market and to grieve the recent shooting death of 21-year-old John Carrington.

Participant’s will gather at 3:30 p.m. on the 4900 Block of West Thompson Street for the event,
which has been organized by Heeding God’s Call, a faith-based movement to prevent gun violence.
According to their press release: “Too many of our families, neighbors and communities are suffering from the ravages of gun violence, fueled by the movement of guns from legal sale at Philadelphia gun shops to illegal street sale.”

Dozens are expected and all are invited.
Earlier today in Northeast Philadelphia, St. John’s Lutheran Church, at 3101 Tyson Avenue in Mayfair, planned a worship service with emphasis on “the evil of gun violence and how the faith community can respond.”

St. John’s will also be hosting Heeding’s “Memorial to the Lost” tee shirt exhibit, witness to the 288 Philadelphians lost last year to gun homicide, beginning with the end of Sunday’s service.
