Recent LGBTQ hate violence incidents in New York City

As we’ve been keeping you informed about in our community alerts*, in the past few weeks there have been three new public incidents of anti-LGBTQ hate violence in New York City. The first occurred on an F Train in Queens on June 30th, the day of the Manhattan Pride Parade. The second occurred a week later on Sunday, July 7th in a midtown, Manhattan cafe.  A third public incident also occurred on Sunday July 7th on a Flushing bound 7 train in Queens.
Local data from our recently released National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP)  report shows that reports of anti-LGBTQ violence in New York City has been on the rise over the last three years.  AVP is deeply concerned with this increasing trend of anti-LGBTQ hate violence and is here to aid our community in standing strong. We are committed to providing support and advocacy during these difficult times.  To read AVP’s Safety Tips for Hate Violence and Police Violence, please click here.

Thank you for making this the best PRIDE ever

From borough to borough, neighborhood to neighborhood, block to block, it was an honor to celebrate Pride month with you. Our most sincere thanks to all of the people we met doing outreach, our phenomenal volunteers and our dedicated staff.  We are excited to announce that during this Pride season, AVP reached over 25,000 people in the month of June alone, distributing vital information about our services and safety tips.  Additionally, our annual Pride Event, FUSION, raised 50% more than last year and had 100 additional attendees!  It was truly inspiring to see so much Pride in action.

Legislative victories!

On June 26th, the New York City Council passed, with a veto-proof majority, the End Discriminatory Profiling Act (Intro. 1080), which protects New Yorkers against discriminatory profiling by the New York Police Department and the NYPD Oversight Act (Intro. 1079), which establishes independent oversight of the NYPD.  In another step forward, on Friday, June 21st, the New York State Assembly passed New York State Bill A2736 which prohibits the use of condoms as “evidence” of prostitution-related crimes.  This practice causes a serious and deadly chilling effect on the carrying and use of condoms in safer sex practices.  AVP worked in coalition with many community based organizations to support the passage of this legislation, which is vital to our work to end profiling of our LGBTQ community members.

AVP Announcements

We have so much news to share this month with our supporters!  We would like to congratulate Tasha Amezcua, our current Program Associate in Community Organizing and Public Advocacy (COPA) who will be stepping into the role of AVP’s Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Community Organizer in COPA.  Tasha brings a great deal of experience as a community organizer and has a deep understanding of the unique barriers LGBTQ survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual violence face.

We would also like to congratulate and welcome LaTorsha (LaLa) Zannell as AVP’s new Executive/Programs Assistant in the Finance and Administrative Department.  LaLa brings a great deal of experience as a dedicated AVP volunteer, and more recently as a intern within the COPA department.

We would also like to announce and welcome Sydney Kopp-Richardson as AVP’s new Education and Hotline Coordinator in the COPA department.  Sydney has 10 plus years of community organizing and direct service experience working with LGBTQH and homeless populations in Chicago and Los Angeles, and is excited to join COPA and work for anti-violence justice in her new position.
