Philly's Own Gossip Girl on "Should you be issued a license to be a parent?"

In our country, you are not allowed to drive unless you pass a test to get your license; Even with employment you can't get a specific job without credentials. Then why in heaven name don't we have policies in line for individuals who want to be parents?

Some people may say I'm just being ridiculous. But just hear me out.

We have so called parents who have neglected their children; abuse their children; KILLED their children; sexual abuse their children; abandon their children; children raising children and parents who are ill parenting. We all know that these issues are reflected in the high murder, violence, and crime rate we see today.

Then why can't we...... to avoid future generations of unwanted and misguided youth..... start monitoring parenting like we do driving in our country?

I'm SERIOUS! If you are fit to have a child; then why not fill out an application to do so?
Why not be interviewed by the same organization who makes the decisions that you are unfit and take your kids away? I'm curious to hear feedback on this topic. So holla at your girl!

Four men arrested for a brutal anti-gay hate violence attack in Babylon attack in Babylon

COMMUNITY ALERT
July 22, 2013

Four men arrested for a brutal hate violence attack in Babylon, Long Island; Reporting Violence Helps End Violence

The New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP) has learned of a brutal hate violence attack, which occurred this Sunday, July 21st at around 3:30am on Deer Park Avenue in Babylon, Long Island. According to media reports, four men in their late teens to early 20’s physically assaulted two men while using homophobic slurs.  Both men were admitted to the hospital, and one is in serious condition, according to media reports. The four men have been arrested on assault and hate crimes charges.

AVP is reaching out to community partner the Long Island LGBT Services Network to provide support in this incident.

This attack happened during a spate of high profile incidents of anti-LGBTQ violence throughout New York City.  Reports of hate violence increased 4% for LGBTQ and HIV-affected New Yorkers in 2012, continuing a three-year trend in increased violence locally, despite a national decrease in violence.  AVP continues to work with LGBTQ communities throughout New York City to respond to and end this violence.

REPORTING VIOLENCE HELPS END VIOLENCE:

AVP encourages you to report violence you experience or witness to our free and confidential 24-hour bilingual (English/Spanish) hotline at 212-714-1141 where you can speak with a trained counselor and seek support, or you can report violence anonymously online at http://avp.org/get-help/report-violence.

Find out more about AVP at our website, www.avp.org, and get regular updates on our ongoing work on Facebook.com/antiviolence or Twitter @antiviolence, and get involved and make a difference.

Recent LGBTQ hate violence incidents in New York City

As we’ve been keeping you informed about in our community alerts*, in the past few weeks there have been three new public incidents of anti-LGBTQ hate violence in New York City. The first occurred on an F Train in Queens on June 30th, the day of the Manhattan Pride Parade. The second occurred a week later on Sunday, July 7th in a midtown, Manhattan cafe.  A third public incident also occurred on Sunday July 7th on a Flushing bound 7 train in Queens.
Local data from our recently released National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP)  report shows that reports of anti-LGBTQ violence in New York City has been on the rise over the last three years.  AVP is deeply concerned with this increasing trend of anti-LGBTQ hate violence and is here to aid our community in standing strong. We are committed to providing support and advocacy during these difficult times.  To read AVP’s Safety Tips for Hate Violence and Police Violence, please click here.

Thank you for making this the best PRIDE ever

From borough to borough, neighborhood to neighborhood, block to block, it was an honor to celebrate Pride month with you. Our most sincere thanks to all of the people we met doing outreach, our phenomenal volunteers and our dedicated staff.  We are excited to announce that during this Pride season, AVP reached over 25,000 people in the month of June alone, distributing vital information about our services and safety tips.  Additionally, our annual Pride Event, FUSION, raised 50% more than last year and had 100 additional attendees!  It was truly inspiring to see so much Pride in action.

Legislative victories!

On June 26th, the New York City Council passed, with a veto-proof majority, the End Discriminatory Profiling Act (Intro. 1080), which protects New Yorkers against discriminatory profiling by the New York Police Department and the NYPD Oversight Act (Intro. 1079), which establishes independent oversight of the NYPD.  In another step forward, on Friday, June 21st, the New York State Assembly passed New York State Bill A2736 which prohibits the use of condoms as “evidence” of prostitution-related crimes.  This practice causes a serious and deadly chilling effect on the carrying and use of condoms in safer sex practices.  AVP worked in coalition with many community based organizations to support the passage of this legislation, which is vital to our work to end profiling of our LGBTQ community members.

Read AVP’s full statement on the legislative victories here.

Save the Date for the 17th Annual Courage Awards

The Courage Awards is AVP’s premier annual fundraising event honoring those whose courageous work has made the world safer for all of us. This year the event will take place on Thursday, September 26th, and will again be held at the beautiful Studio 450.

Please save the date and join event Co-Chairs Brenda Bello, Randall Gibeau, Scott Hernandez, and Lanaya Irvin for this beautiful event.  You can even buy your tickets and sponsorships early.

GunCRisis Reporting- Have you been affected by gun violence?

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 08:58 AM PDT
We are launching a new program at GunCrisis.org, inviting victims, survivors, and witnesses of gun violence to share their stories and voices with our online community.

Note: You should always dial 911 immediately, in the event of an emergency or if you witness a crime.
But if you think more people need to know, or if you just want to share your experience, please consider leaving a message on our voice mail line at (215) 882-9867.

First, tell us your name, the neighborhood or municipality where you reside, and tell us your story. (Sharing your age is optional, but please confirm that you are 18 or over.)

Just tell us what you saw, what you heard and perhaps what you remember feeling, during and after the event if you like. We may post it as we have the example below.
If you have ideas for reducing gun violence, we would like to hear those as well.

Do not share your phone number or any personal information that you would not want us to share on our site. You should know that Caller ID reveals your number to us, but we will not publish it.
Here is an example, from responses we invited after one recent incident:

Witness account from Parkway incident in Philadelphia on the Fourth of July, 2013

Background: On the Fourth of July, staffers from the Gun Crisis Reporting Project monitored Philadelphia Police radio traffic related to a disturbance on the Ben Franklin Parkway during the city’s annual fireworks display.

Next, we found hundreds of social media reports from individuals on location who seemed to believe they had heard gunfire and reported witnessing a stampede of panicked revelers — although no gunshot victims were reported this year.

On July 5th, an unprecedented volume of visitors came to GunCrisis.org, on the order of 15 times our usual traffic, and more than four times our previous maximum. Incoming search terms revealed that thousands of people were coming to our site looking for more information on the incident.
This knowledge, and a series of emerging YouTube videos, led us to invite visitors to share their experience on our voice mail line.
Please consider sharing your story from this incident or any other. Thank you.
