DA Juvenile Division supports Artist Against Violence

George D. Mosee, Jr. Deputy District Attorney Juvenile Division'Our City will not be able to fully realize its tremendous potential until violent crime has been effectively addressed. It is absolutely clear, however, that law enforcement alone cannot prevail. Every Philadelphian has to take responsibility for changing attitudes and actions. On that point, I want to thank Artists Against Violence for doing their part.' - George D. Mosee, Jr. Deputy District Attorney Juvenile Division

Tragedy Strikes PSI-Youth Transformation Project

Last year in 2012 Psi lost a young mentee. He was only 17 years old. He had made some mistakes in life and was put in placement at the Youth Study Center for 6mos. He came home and decided he wanted to do something positive with his life. He asked for help and we helped him get a job, supported him with home life issues and also helped him enroll in Job Corps. The sad part of the story is 2 days before he was to go into the Job Corps program he was killed by gun violence.
The story behind his murder was a territorial and geographical senseless murder. His death took a toll on the Psi staff because we all believed in him and seen his commitment to change.  Our prayers and support went out to his family and his death made us realize how important it is to continue to reach the young men we serve. It is important to collaborate with organizations throughout our region to reach, teach and save our youth. - Darryl Goodman Executive Director Psi

We are in the year of 2013 and I swear I don't want to hear "the i don't know" syndrome

  1. I didn't know my son was selling drugs. I was wondering how he was buying new clothes & stuff.
  2. I didn't know my daughter was having sex. Hell, I didn't know she was that into boys.
  3. I didn't know my son kept a gun in his room. I never seen that before
  4. I didn't know my child was not going to school. I send him out the house every morning.
  5. I didn't know my son was hanging with him; he's a menace
  6. I didn't know by going to jail I was setting a path for my son to follow.
  7. I didn't know my kid was using drugs. I thought the red eyes were allergies & the slurring was IDK?
  8. I didn't know my son was doing home invasions. I thought he was just hanging out with his friends.
  9. I didn't know my child was in a gang
  10. I didn't know my child could not read. I work so the teachers mail the report card
  11. I didn't know the impact my domestic violence relationship had on my child
  12. I didn't know my child was having parties when we were out of town. We gave her everything
  13. I didn't know my child was carrying a weapon to school
  14. I didn't know my child was being bullied.
  15. I didn't know my child was bullying kids in and out of school
  16. I didn't know my child was that talented
  17. I didn't know my child like to read books
  18. I didn't know my boyfriend was molesting my child. He wouldn't do that; he loves me
  19. I didn't know my daughter was out here prostituting
  20. I didn't know my son was a stick up boy
For all of you parents with the "I don't know" syndrome. These words are created for you. To put that issue right smack in your face so it won't be room for denial.  You know it's a shame half these babies are in jail or dead. These children who have lost their life how much of it was the parent's fault for lack of parenting. And you know who you are.... cause the guilt got to be eating you alive. And the ones sitting in jail, you the parents need to be right there with them...... if you not already. And yes we know that happens: fathers in jail with their sons or mothers in jail with their daughter. What a generation after generation tradition to uphold! And you think you not responsible? That the blame should not be on you? Yea right! Now if we don't make an attempt to empower the young they will continually revolve in that cycle and follow in the doom footstep of their parents. So, get this all you "i don't know parents" It is your responsibility and your duty to know!!!!
Because contrary to your belief:

PARENTING IS A RESPONSIBILITY
&
NOT A PRIVILEGED

THE LOVE4LIFE TOUR

The New Start Foundation 501 (c) 3 & Who’s Next Entertainment created the “THE LOVE4LIFE TOUR” as a lifeline to bring organizations that offer services to parents, youth and families together to empower the residents of Philadelphia with the tools necessary to combat violence and save lives on the streets of Philadelphia.
Many parents and care givers are seeking help for troubled situations & don’t know where to turn. This tour is a lifeline to bring support through collaborations for parents, youth and family. Our goal is to partner with organizations to bring various services to inner-city families in need. The “LOVE4LIFE TOUR” is an “A Call to Action” through a united front of organizations throughout Philadelphia to hit the streets to save lives.  We need your support and participation in reaching the residents and youth in our communities. This project is designed to interact heavily during the summer months when our crimes rates reach higher numbers. The tour starts in June, 2013. Our start date is June 15, 2013”

according to bradycenter.org, which reports that an average of eight children and teens under the age of 20 are killed by guns every day here in the US, where children die by guns 11 times as often as children in other high-income countries.

FORMER PHILADELPHIA POLICE COMMISSIONER SYLVESTER JOHNSON
Dear Community Stakeholder:

I am writing to you to introduce a new program, “God’s Crying,” designed to engage and inform young people in our communities around issues of violence, drugs, and crime.
Artists against Violence, New Start Foundation, Point Guard Media and Temple University School of Media and Communications have teamed up to produce six modules on pertinent educational topics to be presented in schools, churches, and youth groups.

Each module contains a 10-15 minute docudrama DVD and is accompanied with teacher resources, activities, and constructive interventions. The subjects of the modules cover topics such as gun violence, domestic abuse, and bullying.  Each module will be delivered by professionals who have a long history of empowering and educating young people.

This work has grown out of the efforts of New Start founder, activist, and educator Paythia Jenkins. The DVD portions contain real stories of the pain caused by violence but presents choices and alternatives for the viewing audience. Young people interact with these stories by discussing alternative strategies than the ones used by the characters in the stories. These DVD’s will be produced by Point Guard Media, who have produced several award winning documentaries and dramatic films around the topic of violence.

Our core audience is young people from the ages of 10 through 21. We are confident that our program can contribute to better decision making by young people. It is our intention to empower young people to take actions that can contribute to the safety of their own communities. In addition, we want to have the viewer learn more about the resources, options, and organizations available locally and nationally.

Our collaborative group is requesting a meeting with your organization to discuss the possibility of a partnership and financial support for this project. Our singular focus is to make a meaningful, measurable difference and promote awareness and choices in the lives of young people at risk for violence.

If YOU HAVE UPCOMING EVENTS OR COMMUNITY NEWS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE PLACED IN OUR NEWSLETTER PLEASE FORWARD INFORMATION TO: PHILLYAAV@GMAIL.COM  SUBJECT: AAV NEWSLETTER. WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND EFFORTS TO HELP MAKE SOCIETY A BETTER AND SAFER PLACE FOR ALL.
