Gossip Girl comments on The Black Blog by Russell Simmons 11/26/2012

Mr, Simmons, I could not have said it any better! We are definitely at a fight for life in the urban communities. Strong voices need to be heard regarding our economic downfalls, educational challenges, drugs, crime, violence and murder in urban communities. But even more so our lack of working together as a people. We must diminish this crab mentality that we have as a people of color and know that the only way WE are going to overcome our societal failures is by working together. We need to make it clear that another person's accomplishment is not to blame for your failure! But a genuine message that YOU can do it too.

We know that this younger generation is a generation that already have it in their head that they are not going to work for anyone. They would rather sell drugs or be unemployed; well, we know this so it is our duty to push entrepreneurship amongst our young people to help our economy grow and diminish ills in our neighborhoods .

I still believe that during of the time crack cocaine epidemic we should have had a better crisis plan. Our communities, our leaders and our families were not prepared for all the ills we are now facing with crime, violence, school dropout rate, lack of family values and murders that now have us a lost for words.

We are a creative and educated people, who only lack the UNITY to overcome our issues and problems. We are a people whose ancestors were made from a stronger cloth that we should have replicated in our daily lives with raising our children and their children. But one thing for sure, it's never too late. I plead with everyone who is in a position to mentor, volunteer or speak out to use whatever your expertise and skills are to donate your time at least 8 hours a month with a non profit, social service, church and/or community organization to add your strength in helping your fellow brother or sister, young or old overcome themselves or obstacles in their way.

Honestly, it irks me that we have foreigners who open businesses in our communities, who DO NOT invest it back in our communities, but send it over to their countries making that economy flourish instead of ours. These businesses are making millions of dollars off of us, when it should be a black business owner that we patronize at the corner of our block. Let's educate and encourage this lost younger generation to be our business owners to promote economic advancement in the Black Communities as a whole and display the "power of the dollar" by recycling dollars as they do in diverse and suburban communities.

Many times I hear the complaints from my sisters and brothers that they don't like patronizing a Black Business Owner because "they (black businesses) are always getting over." OK, what do you call it when these neighborhood Chinese stores sell you food that you are not sure what it is? Or food that is old and spoiled? But you keep going back to them. Not every Black business is out to get you. There are reputable Black dry cleaners, caterers, doctors, dentist, attorneys, accountants, insurance agents, florist, auto dealers and the list goes on who built their business on integrity and ethics. Now days you can get duked by anyone regardless of race. You have to do your homework on everyone. Next time, do your homework on a black business first; you maybe surprised at what you find!

Another thing while on this same note, many of us do not have a problem patronizing a Black artists, whose lyrics are degrading and disrespectful to Black people; thus, making them more rich; but you will complain about supporting a ordinary Black business in your community. My point exactly!

Remember helping someone else adds to your personal growth and development. We're  never too old or too rich to stop learning or growing. We are a diverse race with different beliefs, but the value of life should be the same all the way across the board; things won't change until we embrace and accept our differences and help each other grow. Again, your failure is not due to someone else success. Thriving in our communities and in our lives is in our power; let's do whatever we need to do TOGETHER to make it happen.....

The Black Blog by Russell Simmons

Posted November 26, 2012 by Russell Simmons

Dear President Obama,
As you know, everything I live for speaks to a post-racial America. I am an integrationist in my business practice, my charitable work and my personal life. I want the same for everyone, all the time, and I believe in freedom and justice for all people. I cannot go to sleep at night, unless I know that I am fighting for everyone to benefit from the same rights that I take for granted. These are the core principles that I live by.
Mr. President, I am deeply concerned about the future of urban America, specifically the plight of people of color. Our nation is witnessing an all-out attack by the right-wing against those who are struggling the most during these very difficult times, and sadly they are black and brown people. I have been at your side during this extraordinary and beautiful American journey in which you have showed your deep commitment to our country in attacking an economic depression our people didn’t cause, wars they didn’t ask for or want, and levels of poverty and inequality they don’t deserve. During this last presidential campaign, I traveled from state to state helping ensure that we continue our mission to uplift those who are fighting everyday to get into the middle class. However, there are many living in poverty who feel they will never get out. I know you have to be the President not just to black America, but to all America, but they need to hear your loud voice, as only a President like you can have this critical conversation with our community.
Mr. President, I am concerned that there are some people in Washington who will not let you protect our communities. We know it is very difficult to speak up about these issues without getting attacked by those right wing critics in Congress. But, I have spoken to thousands of ordinary Americans and I have heard stories that have challenged us to do more. When 50 people are shot in Chicago every weekend during the summertime, that's a black problem. When black men are unemployed in some cities at rates above 40 percent, we are in trouble. When 74 percent of African-American boys do not graduate from high school in New York City, they aren't just failing out, we are failing them. We know that if these epidemics were happening in White neighborhoods, it would be declared a national emergency. Instead, this has become the status-quo for our communities. Although I am writing about black America, this is not solely about race, but rather this is about a new America, that no longer values one life more than the other.
Those who are still living in struggle, are deeply concerned about the obstructionist Republicans in the House of Representatives who have done nothing but made your job more difficult. These patriotic Americans are concerned because they are afraid that they will be forced to carry the burden of a recession whose wrath they have already felt. They are asking for a "circle of protection" from non-profits, religious leaders, cultural figures and politicians, as we enter into the so-called "fiscal cliff" negotiations. But even further than that, they are asking for an agenda that will dismantle the systemic injustices that have plagued these communities for decades.
If our ultimate goal is putting Americans back to work and creating new jobs for young people, let's work backwards. What is preventing these communities from entering or re-entering the work force? Or rather what skills are needed for them to be competitive? After listening to people's stories from across this country, this is what I have learned we need to do in order to re-build our families, our communities, our companies and our neighborhoods.
1. End the "War on Drugs." For the past forty years, we have unsuccessfully waged a war against our own people, creating a "baby to prison" pipeline that has annihilated the working population of young black and brown men. Through the use of archaic and unjust laws, we have been able to warehouse millions of prisoners, many of whom were first-time, non-violent offenders. The solution to our drug problem is not imprisoning more people, it is rehabilitation, fair laws and drug courts.
2. Continue the vicious assault on the eradication of poverty. Levels of poverty have hit an all-time high during this recession, however we have solutions that can bring these numbers down. We should continue to innovate programs for the most vulnerable, including job training (technical skills), fatherhood classes, healthcare prevention, teen-pregnancy prevention, after-school activities (including arts and sports) and more access to healthier foods.
3. Build the best and affordable education system in the world. Your understanding of education as a path out of poverty has resonated with millions of families in this country. Your protection of Pell grants, promotion of community colleges and the "race to the top" initiative have been some of your greatest accomplishments in your first term. The 2020 goal of America having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world is attainable and we should keep fighting to reach it.
Mr. President, this is about your legacy. You will not run for another office. You will not have to campaign ever again. Our communities showed up in record numbers during this last election, many of them still waiting in line to vote when you were giving your victory speech at 1:30 in the morning. We know we will face resistance from Republicans and their rich, lobbyist friends, so that is why we need you now more than ever. You seem to be the only one in Washington who is willing to stand up to these bullies. If we focus on these three agenda items, while continuing to build employment opportunities, I humbly believe that we will put all Americans back to work in due time. Not only will it grow and strengthen our economy, but we will create a future where "the young boy on the south side of Chicago" you mentioned on election night, will be able to see his life beyond the nearest street corner. At that point, we will know, our work is done, and your legacy will be sealed.

 Historic Advances for LGBTQ Survivors

On February 12th, the U.S. Senate for passed Senate Bill S.47 which re-authorizes a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) that includes explicit sexual orientation and gender identity protections by a vote of 78 to 22.  This historic legislative victory for LGBTQ communities comes as a direct result of tireless efforts on the part of the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs – which AVP coordinates – and our national partners, including the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, the Human Rights Campaign and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force among others.

This legislative action follows a landmark report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), released in January, which represents the first nationally representative prevalence estimates of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence among those who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual in the United States.

AVP’s Executive Director, Sharon Stapel has been speaking out in the media about these two historic advances, and the need for the House of Representatives to swiftly take up, and pass, a VAWA that protects all people.  Read Sharon’s OpEd in the Hill, and quotes in ABC News, and Bloomberg Media reports.

An LGBTQ VAWA must now pass the House of Representatives before LGBTQ people and all survivors of violence are protected.  This past weekend, AVP’s Executive Director, Sharon Stapel, spoke at a VAWA Press Conference organized by Senator Kirstin Gillibrand and Representative Grace Meng.  Read more about the Press Conference here.

Recent Homicides in Queens and Manhattan

In the last three weeks, we have seen three brutal homicides of gay men in New York City.  On February 11thJoseph Benzinger, age 54, was found dead at the Crown Motor Inn on Queens Boulevard, an intimate partner of the victim has been arrested in connection to his death.  Just weeks before, on January 28thCharles Romo, age 48, was found dead in his Hamilton Heights apartment in Manhattan. Three homeless people whom Romo knew have been arrested and charged in his homicide.  In a separate incident on January 25thDavid Rangel, age 53, was found dead in his apartment in Jackson heights, Queens.  Police are currently investigating Rangel’s death as a homicide, and believe he may have met his assailant online.   AVP is working with the NYPD, the District Attorney’s Offices, elected officials, community based organizations and community leaders in all five boroughs to investigate and respond to these incidents.

These homicides have occurred at the same time that AVP has seen an increase in reports of violence from community members using online sites and apps.  In response to recent incidents and reports, AVP held an event on February 13, REAL TALKS! Jackson Heights: Staying Safe with Online Pick-Ups, in collaboration with the LGBT Justice Project of Make the Road NY.  We have also been speaking out in the media including CBS NewsDNAinfo, the New York Daily NewsWPIX11 NEWS and more to raise awareness of these homicides and promote safety for our communities.

The stigma and shame surrounding online dating and hook ups makes our communities less safe.  AVP encourages you to use our Safety Tips when using dating sites and apps and stay tuned for more community events and ways to engage around this important issue.

Creating Change Report Back

From January 23rd to January 27th, the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs attended the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Annual Creating Change Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.  NCAVP presented four workshops on topics ranging from rapid incident response organizing, safety strategies for hooking up, sexual violence in LGBTQH communities, and anti-LGBTQH police violence organizing models from across the country.  NCAVP also hosted a member luncheon, held a strategy session for its Governance Committee, and created and distributed safety tips for all 3,000 plus conference attendees.

AVP learns of Anti-Gay Hate Violence Incident in Manhattan

AVP has learned of an anti-gay hate violence incident that occurred on Monday, January 18th, on a 2 subway train in Manhattan.  According to the New York Daily News, Urena Morel Frankelly, age 23, and his partner had their picture taken by two women which prompted a verbal altercation.  Six people then attacked Frankelly, and witnesses report that anti-gay slurs were used during the altercation.

According to the most recent report by National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), which AVP coordinates, youth and young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 years old were 2.41 times as likely to experience physical violence compared to LGBTQH people age 30 and older.

AVP is reaching out to the NYPD, Hate Crimes Task Force, partner organizations, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and elected officials.  We will keep you informed of developments and any additional ways to take action.

Gun Crisis Philadelphia Report of the Day

Earlier this weekthe St. Louis Post-Dispatch published a statement from a group of pediatric emergency and trauma physicians at St. Louis Children’s Hospital:
St. Louis Children’s HospitalSt. Louis Children’s Hospital
Since 2002, St. Louis Children’s Hospital has cared for 771 children injured or killed by gunfire; 35 percent were younger than 15.
We concur with recent recommendations from more than a dozen national pediatric professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, Academic Pediatric Association, and the American College of Surgeons in response to the Newtown school shooting. We called for action in three areas: reinstating and revising the ban on assault weapons and large ammunition magazines; improving quality and availability of mental health services; and reducing the exposure our children have to media violence.
In addition, we called for increasing research on the relationship of these factors on the epidemic of death and injury to children caused by firearm violence and for ending restrictions to this research imposed by Congress.

Mayor Nutter: 'Public sentiment is shifting' | #GunCrisis: Philadelphia

          http://guncrisis.org/2012/04/13/mayor-nutter-got-a-gun-go-to-jail/

You  know nowadays I'm starting to believe that jail is too easy for anyone who takes another persons life (in my opinion)

          Let's see:

          1. They get to be with friends they haven't see since their incarceration
          2. They have a bed/cot to sleep in
          3. Guaranteed 3 meals a day
          4. Health Benefits
          5. Educational Resources and
          6. Cable to name a few
OK their freedom is taken away. Sadly, enough many of the individuals who are incarcerated were imprisoned in their hearts, minds and souls while living on the streets. Well, at least in jail they have the structure they were missing out here.

Honestly, I don't think the threat of jail is scary enough!  For real for real it seems like going to jail adds more to their street credibility then managing reform.

The titled of the article should read: Got A Gun; Get the Death Penalty!  Then I wonder how many of them would think first before they do the crime.......I wonder would the violence rate reduce. In this day and time.....people need more fear then the threat of jail....What do you think?
