Background checks for gun sales should be MANDATORY!

CEASE FIRE PA

Dear Paythia,

The power to save lives rests in the hands of our Pennsylvania leaders. The question is, will they
stand up and drive action on common sense reforms that would keep us all safer?

We need our U.S. Senators -- Sen. Toomey and Sen. Casey --  to support a background check
leaders to do their part in Washington.

This week, CeaseFirePA stood with allies from across the state and from
Mayor Bloomberg’s national coalition of mayors and police chiefs to deliver a simple message:
Every gun sale -- in Pennsylvania, and anywhere in America -- should take place after a background check has been performed.

This is a simple measure and doesn’t place any undue burden on our citizens. Most background checks take about 2 minutes. It’s a common sense reform, and we need it immediately.

In Harrisburg, leaders like Attorney General Kathleen Kane have paved the way for progress. With the support
of our community and our allies, we’ve seen a number of major goals met in the past few weeks.

We have the momentum, and our national leaders need to hear from us. Speak up and tell
Sen. Toomey and Sen. Casey to support a background check for all gun sales.

This is an exciting time for gun violence prevention activists. Thanks for helping us keep the pressure on.

French Montana Attacked In Drive-By Shooting, One Person Dead

After an attempt on Rick Ross' life, French Montana becomes the target of a drive-by shooting.

French Montana was the target of a drive-by shooting last night following a
performance at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's Theater of the Living Arts.

According to NBC 10 Philadelphia, the Coke Boys leader was engaging
with fans outside of his tour bus outsideof the Holiday Inn on Penn's
french

Landing when someone driving by open fired.
A 27-year-old man was shot in the stomach and rushed to
Hahnemann University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Another victim was shot in the shoulder and is currently in stable condition.

Police are currently questioning 25 people including Montana about the incident.
Three were taken into custody for carrying guns, as investigators
say that someone inside the bus fired back after the initial shot.
There are currently no suspects in the shooting.
"It's just ignorant. You fire into a crowd and you're gonna hit somebody.
In this case, unfortunately, someone was killed. Don't know if they had
anything to do with anything, if they were a fan or what,"
said Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey. "When you find people like that, they
should just never see the light of day again. I mean that kind of behavior's
 just unacceptable.
For me, there's just no rehabilitation for anything like that," Ramsey said.
This isn't the first drive-by shooting to occur in recent months. In January,
Rick Ross was targeted in Florida, crashing his Rolls Royce into a building after
gunmen shot at his vehicle.
He also took to Twitter shortly after the incident to post a picture from
inside police headquarters, writing, "nobody got time for this shit."

Hate Violence Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and HIV-Affected Communities

COMMUNITY ALERT 2
March 1, 2013

AVP responding to reports of a transgender woman being sexually assaulted by gunpoint

AVP has learned of reports that a transgender woman was sexually assaulted at gunpoint by at least three people in Midtown Manhattan yesterday. The suspects fled after the assault, police said. The woman was treated for injuries at Roosevelt Hospital.  This incident is currently being investigated by the NYPD and by the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force; however, at this time it is unclear whether the attack was bias-motivated.   The NYPD has released surveillance images of three suspects.

NCAVP’s most recent report, Hate Violence Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and HIV-Affected Communities in the United States in 2011, documented 30 anti-LGBTQH murders, the highest yearly total ever recorded by the coalition.  This is an 11% increase from the 27 people murdered in 2010.  Transgender women made up 40% of the 30 reported hate murders in 2011, while representing only 10% of total hate violence survivors and victims.  In this report, NCAVP provides specific recommendations for policymakers, funders, and community members to reduce and prevent violence against transgender people of color.

AVP is working with the NYPD and its Special Victims Unit and Hate Crimes Task Force, partner organizations, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and elected officials.  We will keep you informed of developments and any additional ways to take action.

AVP encourages you to report violence you experience or witness to our free and confidential 24-hour bilingual (English/Spanish) hotline at 212-714-1141 where you can speak with a trained counselor and seek support, or you can report violence anonymously online: http://avp.org/get-help/report-violence.

Last week, three people were killed and five injured in a shootout and crash on the Las Vegas strip.
According to the Associated Press, police think that shootout may have started as an argument at a resort-casino
on the same night French Montana performed in the casino’s nightclub.
BusIn Philadelphia, police reported that fans followed Montana’s
entourage to their hotel on Columbus Boulevard after a performance Thursday night, and witnesses said
someone in a passing car opened fire, according to 6ABC.

Tara Murtha reports for Philadelphia Weekly on how gun sales in
Pennsylvania are bucking a national trend:
According to records published by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal
Background Check System (NICS), 135,603 background checks for
firearms purchases were conducted in Pennsylvania last month.
That’s almost triple the number of previous years: 47,456 background
checks were conducted in Pennsylvania in January 2012 and 49,123
    in January 2011.

The startling increase — which began the month before, in December,
when 133,241 checks were run — represents a post-Sandy Hook
sales boom nationwide that one gun seller in Tennessee called
a “banic,” meaning “people were panicked President Barack Obama
    would ban guns.”

Pennsylvania’s numbers, though, actually defy the national trend,
which showed an average of a 10 percent drop between December and January — attributed to gun sellers in many states literally running out of guns
because of the abrupt surge. Gun sellers in Pennsylvania, apparently,
were better stocked than the American average.

No gunshot victims were reported in Philadelphia on Friday but the
double shooting and homicide near a performer’s tour bus on Columbus Boulevard
late Thursday night capped an unusually violent seven-day period during which
shooters killed five people and wounded at least 21 more, two of them critically.

A 12-year-old was wounded by stray gunfire during an incident in Olney,
a grandmother and child ducked bullets in their North Philadelphia home,
and gunfire shattered the windows of a SEPTA bus carrying 11 passengers
     through West Philadelphia.

Loved ones grieved openly when a
community leader was killed in front of his West Philadelphia home
Wednesday night. Another man was wounded in Kensington at about
the same time. Two more people were killed and four were wounded
across Philadelphia in separate incidents on Tuesday.

A report in the South Philly Review on Thursday confirmed that
four people were wounded in an incident we reported on
South Columbus Boulevard early Monday morning.
Altogether, eight shooting incidents were reported over last weekend.
Finally, Twitter users were reporting live when police shot and
wounded a suspect at the end of a car chase in Center City Thursday night.
