After weeklong stretch during which only four shooting victims were reported in Philadelphia, eleven men have now been shot since Wednesday morning, three of them fatally.
A 22-year-old man was shot to death just after noon Friday on Park Avenue near Somerset Street in North Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Daily News identified the victim as Kasim Covil, in a report from the scene.
Another man was pronounced dead on location after a shooting around 5 a.m. Saturday, inside an apartment building on Foulkrod Street near Frankford Avenue in East Frankford. Investigators believe it may have been an hour before anyone called 911 for help, according to 6ABC. NBC10 reports that the victim was killed execution-style:
Around the same time, police were rushing a 28-year-old man to Temple University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with an arm wound after he was shot on North Darien Street, not far from 9th and Pike Streets in the Hunting Park section of the city.
Police rushed a 33-year-old man to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was listed in stable condition after he was shot in the chest shortly after midnight on North 53rd Street near Warren Street in the Carroll Park section of West Philadelphia. According to another report from NBC10, the victim was sitting on stoop of a home when two suspects approached him at least one opened fire.
As we previously reported, two men were listed in stable condition after they were wounded in separate shootings Thursday night in West Philadelphia, one man was shot to death early Thursday in East Falls, and two men were wounded Wednesday afternoon and evening in South Philadelphia and West Philadelphia.

So far in 2014, 53 homicides have been reported in Philadelphia, up from 41 victims on this date in 2013 but still down from 78 reported one year earlier, according to police. The year-to-date figures represent a 29 percent increase over last year, but still a 32 percent decrease when compared with 2012.
The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting on a new initiative to address gun violence in Southwest Philadelphia, explaining The Councilman Kenyatta Johnson Neighborhood Task Force on Youth Gun Violence plans to “connect area residents with city services and organizations as a preventive measure for youth at risk of succumbing to gun violence; to promote conflict resolution in surrounding schools, rec centers and other gathering places; and to reintegrate juvenile and adult ex-offenders into society.”
