Hate Violence Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and HIV-Affected Communities

COMMUNITY ALERT 2

AVP responding to reports of a transgender woman being sexually assaulted by gunpoint

AVP has learned of reports that a transgender woman was sexually assaulted at gunpoint by at least three people in Midtown Manhattan yesterday. The suspects fled after the assault, police said. The woman was treated for injuries at Roosevelt Hospital.  This incident is currently being investigated by the NYPD and by the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force; however, at this time it is unclear whether the attack was bias-motivated.   The NYPD has released surveillance images of three suspects.

NCAVP’s most recent report, Hate Violence Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and HIV-Affected Communities in the United States in 2011, documented 30 anti-LGBTQH murders, the highest yearly total ever recorded by the coalition.  This is an 11% increase from the 27 people murdered in 2010.  Transgender women made up 40% of the 30 reported hate murders in 2011, while representing only 10% of total hate violence survivors and victims.  In this report, NCAVP provides specific recommendations for policymakers, funders, and community members to reduce and prevent violence against transgender people of color.

AVP is working with the NYPD and its Special Victims Unit and Hate Crimes Task Force, partner organizations, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and elected officials.  We will keep you informed of developments and any additional ways to take action.

AVP encourages you to report violence you experience or witness to our free and confidential 24-hour bilingual (English/Spanish) hotline at 212-714-1141 where you can speak with a trained counselor and seek support, or you can report violence anonymously online: http://avp.org/get-help/report-violence.
