Gun Crisis Philadelphia Reporting

A man was found lying in a pool of blood in the 3400 block of North J Street in the Harrowgate section of Philadelphia, late Monday night.
HarrowgateHomicide07aAccording to CBS3 police received a 911 call reporting gunshots in the area, shortly after 11:30 p.m.  The victim who police believe is in his 20′s was found shot numerous times in the back, and was pronounced dead at the scene by medics. Police also say they found numerous bullet casings around the corner on E. HarrowgateHomicide15aAccording to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, the man had no identification on him, so they are still working on identifying him.  Investigators are also hoping that surveillance cameras on numerous businesses in the area might have caught something they can use in their investigation as reported by  6ABC and NBC10.HarrowgateHomicide02a

We have launched a new community calendar at the Gun Crisis Reporting Project, to focus on violence prevention and related community events in Philadelphia. Two important events are scheduled Wednesday night, just a few blocks apart in Center City:

Cheyney University presents United For Change: Collaborative Solutions to Reduce Gun Violence: A Forum, scheduled from 5:30 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, in the Caucus Room of Philadelphia City Hall.
Panelists include Philadelphia Councilman Curtis Jones, Stoneleigh Foundation Executive Director Cathy M. Weiss, Jeffrey Brown, Chairman of UpLift Solutions, and Shondell Revell, Executive Director of the Youth Violence Reduction Partnership. More info at cheyney.edu.
From 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Philadelphia Physicians for Social Responsibility is hosting Gun Violence in America – A Public Health and Social Crisis, at Friends Center at 15th and Cherry Streets.
Speakers include Dr. C William Schwab, Professor of Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. John Rich, Professor at the Drexel University School of Public Health, and Shira Goodman, Executive Director of Ceasefire PA. More info at psrphila.org.
On Thursday, Michelle Breslauer from Institute for Economics and Peace will present: How Do We Measure Peace? The Pillars of Peace and the Global Peace Index, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Carriage House/LGBT Center, 3907 Spruce Street, at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Institute for Economics and Peace is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit research organization dedicated to shifting the world’s focus to peace as a positive, achievable, and tangible measure of human well-being and progress. IEP produces the Global Peace Index, national peace indices such as the US Peace Index, the Pillars of Peace framework, and analysis of the economic impact of peace. More info at peacedayphilly.org.
Heeding God’s Call, a faith-based movement to prevent gun violence, has announced a Good Friday Vigil in Philadelphia, on March 29th, 2013.
Participants will gather at 4 p.m. at St. Paul’s Baptist Church at 1000 Wallace Street, at the corner of 10th Street. They will proceed to Benjamin Franklin High School at 550 North Broad Street, which is one block north of Spring Garden Street. More info at heedinggodscall.org.
Also on Friday, Philadlephia’s 18th Police District invites community members to a Crime Prevention Event, scheduled from 10:00AM to 3:00PM at the Sayre High School parking lot, in the rear at 5800 Walnut Street. More info at phillypolice.com.

4th Street HomicideNeighbors, friends and relatives gathered around the crime scene after a 25-year-old man was shot to death on the 3000 block of North 4th Street in the Fairhill section of Philadelphia late Monday afternoon. Photographs for the Gun Crisis Reporting Project by Joseph Kaczmarek.
4th Street HomicideAccording to police, the victim was shot several times in his upper torso and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
As police investigated, about a dozen of the victim’s friends and family members of gather along the sidewalk, and in an abandoned lot across the street.
A man who identified himself as ‘Baby Boy’ said “I don’t play around on these streets anymore, ’cause I don’t want my kids to see me this way.”
